KING of TAPES 2021 progress update

Here's an update on what's been going on with KING of TAPES since the previous update!

We've been adding many new features and overall improvements to nearly everything in the game. Here's a few highlights:

Improved look and feel

We've improved the overall look and feel of the store, including textures and models. Many actions also have nice animations now - such as using the VCR to rewind tapes: You'll see the VCR open, the tape slide in, and the VCR buttons move. You can also visually see the tape rewind inside the cassette - you can use this to determine if a cassette has been rewound without having to put it into the VCR. It sounds simple, but it makes actions feel much nicer than the cassette magically teleporting.

You might also notice in the screenshot there are posters on the store walls. This is another new feature, where the game will procedurally generate posters for movies. They contain names of actors and the director, and a procedurally generated tagline.

There's also brand new areas in the back of the store, and you can actually leave the store now (although there isn't much anything outside just yet)

More varied gameplay

It's now possible for customers to call you and ask you to reserve a tape for them. They will come to pick up the tape later, and you'll have to find it for them. You can also use the phone to order additional tapes for your store, or order items such as sodas.  To manage all this, there are notepads which display what has been reserved, what's been rented out, and what tapes your store owns.

We've also changed up how the cash register works. Instead of simply right clicking the customer, you need to use the cash register to charge them the correct amount of money. For example, if a customer returns a tape that hasn't been rewound, you can charge them a rewind fee.

You are also able to freely position the phone and the VCR where you please. The only constraint is that you must be able to connect them to a power outlet. Yep, we added a cable system where items that require power need to be connected to an outlet, or they won't work.

What's next?

We've added a lot of other improvements in addition to the ones I've mentioned so far. We're also working on a number of major features, such as being able to build a store completely from scratch for that true tycoon/management sim experience.

How do you get access to these new features? These are available for our private alpha testers currently. We might send out a few more invites for it - visit us on KINGofTAPES.com and sign up for the mailing list to know when.
